DATA ENGINEER

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Chief Digital Office (CDO) leads the Organization's digital transformation, ensuring UNEP can scan, test and scale digital technologies to better support Member States and partners in tackling the triple planetary crisis. The CDO provides vision, standards and governance for digital products, enterprise platforms, data and AI, and works across divisions, regional offices and MEA secretariats to embed digital-by-design approaches. This position is located in the Chief Digital Office at the Nairobi duty station. Under the overall guidance of the Chief Digital Officer and direct supervision of the Head of Infrastructure and DevOps and closely collaborate with data science, analytics, environmental information and application delivery teams across UNEP, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in data engineering, data integration, data management or related area is required.

Experience building and operating data pipelines from multiple sources, using ETL/ELT tools, is required.

Experience with database programming languages (SQL) and at least one high-level programming language used in data engineering (such as Python) is required.

Experience with version control and CI/CD toolchains (e.g. Git, GitLab/GitHub, Jenkins, Azure DevOps) for deploying data workflows is required.

Experience with cloud or hybrid data infrastructure and with the deployment of data solutions in containerized environments is desirable.

Experience working in or with UN entities, international organizations or other large, distributed organizations is desirable

Training/certification in one or more of the following is desirable: cloud/data platform engineering (AWS, Azure, GCP), big data frameworks (Spark, Hadoop), container/orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), DevOps/CI-CD, or ITIL service management.
